How to Choose 12kV / 35kV HV Switchgear
A practical guide to selecting medium-voltage switchgear — withdrawable vs fixed, vacuum vs SF6, and the rated parameters you must specify.
Choosing the right medium-voltage switchgear starts with your network voltage and duty cycle, not a model number.
Withdrawable or fixed type?
KYN28A-12 (12kV) and KYN61-40.5 (35kV) are withdrawable metal-enclosed switchgear: the circuit breaker sits on a truck that can be withdrawn for safe maintenance. Fixed-type units are simpler but require de-energizing the whole cubicle for breaker work. For compact cable networks, the XGN15-12 SF6 ring main unit saves space.
Parameters you must specify
- Rated voltage: 12 kV or 40.5 kV
- Rated current: 630–3150 A (busbar)
- Short-time withstand current: 25 / 31.5 kA (4s)
- Breaking capacity matched to the network fault level
- Protection degree: IP4X for the enclosed switchboard
