IEC vs GB Standards for Switchgear — What Buyers Should Know
How IEC 62271 and Chinese GB/T standards relate for HV switchgear, and what it means when you import equipment to different markets.
When sourcing switchgear internationally, the standard on the nameplate decides where the equipment is accepted without re-testing.
The two families
- IEC 62271-200 — the international benchmark for AC metal-enclosed switchgear and controlgear.
- GB/T 3906-2020 — the Chinese national standard, technically aligned with IEC 62271-200; GB/T 11022-2020 covers common specifications.
For low-voltage assemblies the pair is IEC 61439 and GB/T 7251.1-2023. For transformers, efficiency follows GB 20052-2024 (Grade 1/2).
What this means for buyers
Equipment tested to GB/T is generally technically equivalent to IEC 62271-200, but a third-party IEC test report or CB certificate is usually required for markets that mandate IEC marking. Ask the supplier for the exact test report and the rated values (not just the standard number).
